ICBC Optional Coverages

Basic Autoplan makes sure that all drivers in BC have some insurance coverage. But most BC motorists buy extra optional coverages for themselves, their automobiles, and any excess equipment they may have added to their vehicle.

These additional optional coverage may be purchased from a variety of automobile insurers in British Columbia, including Sussex Insurance’s own optional auto coverage Swerve. Click on Private Optional Insurance for more information.

ICBC Autoplan also offers a variety of optional coverages to help meet these needs:

  • Extended Third-Party Liability coverage increases the amount of coverage you carry for damage to other people or their property. Basic Autoplan insurance requires that every driver carry a minimum of $200,000 in liability insurance, but in today's world, with the increasing size of court judgments and lawsuit settlements, many people want the comfort of extended coverage. Coverage can be purchased for up to $5 million;
  • Collision coverage provides payment to repair your vehicle if it is damaged as a result of upset or collision with another vehicle, an object or a person, including the ground or road, or impact with an object on or in the ground;
  • Comprehensive coverage will cover loss or damage by any cause that is not already covered by collision insurance. This includes, but is not limited to, fire, lightning, theft, (except by an employee or member of your household) vandalism, malicious mischief, windstorm, earthquake, hail, impact with animals, missiles, falling or flying objects, riot, civil commotion, rising water or the stranding , sinking, burning, derailment or collision of a conveyance transporting the vehicle on land or water. However, it does not cover the contents of any vehicle other than some contents of a motor home, tires, unless stolen or if the damage is a result of one of the losses listed above, or any part of the vehicle as a result of mechanical breakdown, rust, corrosion, wear and tear, freezing or explosion within the combustion chamber - unless the damage is caused by one of the losses listed above;
  • Specified Perils covers you for specific coverages only. These include fire, lightning, theft, (except by an employee or a member of your household) windstorm, earthquake, hail, explosion, riot, civil commotion, falling or forced landing of an aircraft or portion of it, rising water or the stranding, sinking, derailment, or collision of a conveyance transporting the vehicle on land or water. Losses which are not covered include vandalism, malicious mischief or falling rocks or other objects, or impact with an animal. Customers wishing coverages described under comprehensive or specified perils will only purchase one or the other, but not both. Claims made against comprehensive or specified perils coverages do not affect your ICBC Claim-Rated Scale discount.
  • Loss of Use coverage is available if you have collision, comprehensive or specified perils. This provides you with substitute transportation while your vehicle has been stolen, has been written-off in an accident, or is being repaired as a result of an insurable claim, except in the case of specified perils coverage, which only covers theft. There are different daily limits for you to choose from, to suit your own personal needs.
  • Excess Underinsured Motorist Protection protects you in the event that a motorist who causes an accident doesn’t hold sufficient insurance to cover all injuries caused, if they have insurance at all. This coverage extends the basic $1 million limit to $2 million.
